The day they surfaced

Didn't get much sleep - due to having set the alarm very early I woke up in the middle of the night wondering what time it was, so put the radio in my ear and was transfixed by hearing a special broadcast on the BBC world service - live coverage the rescue of the Chilean miners. I stayed awake listening for about an hour and a half until the second miner was on his way to the surface.

Then had to wake up after what seened like a very short sleep in order to take the long train journey to Milton Keynes; meetings all afternoon. Went across to the hotel and caught up with the miners - 18 up by then. A group of us met for a meal and a drink or three but when I got back to my room at about 11.30 I turned on the television. I found myself watching the live coverage until they got the last man out, about 2 am.

So I didn't get any other photos - but this snapshot of the big screen probably represents the most important thing that happened today.
