Bench support

I've noticed this thing a few times but have only just photographed it. It is metal and is embedded in the top of the concrete and aggregate leg of a park bench. While there are many of them dotted throughout the park, this is the only one with this strange inclusion. It is about an inch across.

I am also quite keen on the lichen. Which is also on the rest of the bench legs.
