Mills no. 1 - Bee Hive Works
I've decided to take a series of shots of local mills.
This mill was one of eight in a small town on the outskirts of Manchester. I've tried to find out the name and use of this mill, without success. I will keep looking and update this page if I discover some information.
The mill is currently divided into separate units and has several users such as a gym and storage facility.
My first mill, above, is not actually a mill at all - but I'm leaving it on anyway! Formerly known as Bee Hive Works, it was recorded as a Pickle and Jam Works on a 1894 map of the area. By 1923, the works was listed as a Drugs and Confectioners Works. Although, not a mill, it is a good example of the scale of workplaces of the time.
It also explains why a pub of the same name just around the corner, is so called!
