Tyre tracks and broken hearts....
This is one of the more unusual things in our garden.
It's the tyre off a 3.5 litre Formula Renault racing car and it belongs to the Son and Heir.
He's always been a fan of motorsport, cars and bikes. He even works in a bike shop.
When he was about 14 he persuaded me to take him to British Touring Cars at Oulton Park. We got a great view at Knickerbrook chicane and had a fantastic day except for one thing. One of the Renault Languna's had a coming together with a Ford right in front of where we were sitting on the grassy bank and lost its bumper.
Chris couldn't work out why I wasn't too keen on jumping onto the track to salvage the bumper and take it home with us! He seemed quite convinced that his Mum would let him hang said bumper on his bedroom wall and thought it was unreasonable of me to suggest otherwise. He also thought I was being a bit of a wuss not running onto a track filled with about 24 cars.
Years later we all went to a Renault racing day at Donnington and had another brilliant day, Clio racing, F3 racing, F Renault racing, a fly-by by a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster, the Red Arrows and the Renault F1 car displaying on the circuit. The year after Chris went back and came home with this! He'd been walking along behind the pits at the end of the day, heading for the car park, when he spotted a pile of tyres. Most were worn and damaged but this one had obviously been dumped by mistake, so he asked very nicely if he could have one of the old tyres as a souvenir, then legged it with this one.
Quite why it still residies in our garden when he has left home I don't know, but getting rid of it would be a real problem so I guess we're stuck with it....still it makes for an interesting conversation opener when people come to visit.
