What did we use before olive oil?

I don't remember Mum cooking with Olive Oil when we were young, in fact I remember our family turning up our noses at a Moussaka dish served up in a cafe which was swimming in the stuff; today I'd be lapping up its oily goodness.
Somwhere in time Scottish people began to cook with Olive oil, but I don't know when that was. Anyone know when or why?

I was cooking with oil today from the jumbo bottle of olive oil which we bring back from our camping holidays to France each year. That reminds me of delicious seafood and simple fresh BBQ's cooked outside our tent in the late evening sun. Owen playing with the Dutch or Irish kids (two nations hooked on camping) and Nancy and I supping from a glass of local wine...happy days....
