Community spirit.

This is a pedestrianised street in Whitley Bay.
The people living here, were troubled at night by the youths in a nearby park, who used the facility as a drinking rendezvous, so they decided to do something about it.
First they had a meeting with the council and the police, who decided to declare the park an alcohol-free zone.
Then one man put out plants in pots, to hide graffiti on his garden wall. Others copied him, everyone helping out with watering and tidying up, and this year they have won an award for "best street effort", in the North Tyneside in Bloom competition.
It just shows what can be done when everyone pulls together.
