River Avon At Lacock
For the past two days I have blipped two minor rivers local to me, but Wiltshire has two chief rivers that I can think of, both called the River Avon. I believe the word Avon derives from a Welsh word meaning "river", so it is unsurprising that there are several rivers of that name, perhaps the most famous being the one that flows through Stratford.
This is the River Avon that passes through Bristol, sometimes called the Bristol Avon. It is pictured here as it passes Lacock Abbey, which lies behind the angler on the opposite bank. The other Avon in Wiltshire, the Salisbury Avon, rises east of Devizes and emerges at the Channel at Christchurch Harbour in Dorset.
