C'est une belle vie

Please pray for South Sudan.

Asiki Isaac Dagama is visiting Dallas from South Sudan. It's his first trip to the U.S. and a delight for my spirit to spend time with him. Asiki reminds me of the upcoming opportunity and challenge facing the people of South Sudan. After decades of war and displacement all over east Africa, the South Sudanese people will have an opportunity to vote in a referendum election next January. Many people believe the referendum could lead to civil war and new violence, and people around the world are praying for (and working towards) a peaceful election.

Asiki spoke at an event tonight about God's work in Sudan, and asked us to remember Sudan in our prayers. In his words, Sudan has gone from "negative" to "zero" and needs support as they take "step one and then two..."

His talk reminded me of a promise I made to an amazing Sudanese woman named Gloria Kaya in February. When I asked Gloria how I could be praying for her, she said "Please don't forget us. Please don't forget my people. Please remember us here, fighting for our freedom and our lives." Gloria, I will always remember you.

The people of Sudan are beautiful. Resilient. They have survived more than I can ever imagine having to endure. They are joyful. Hopeful. They see a future for their country and for their lives. Most inspiring, they are full of God's grace and mercy.

If you are reading this, please take a moment to remember and (if you are so inclined) to say a prayer for those around the world who don't have the blessing to live in freedom or peace.

Please remember them.
