Times, they are a-changing

When I was second mate there was an old chair in the wheelhouse but you were not allowed to sit in it. The risk of falling asleep was too great. It changed quite rapidly because a few years later the first comfortable bridge chairs were seen on the bridge. Right now they are thousand dollar chairs, with air cushions to prevent you getting hurt by the cushions.

Much longer ago, the wheelhouses were only a shelter for the helmsman, the mate stood outside, hell or high water, or both.

This is how our bridge looks like, with the officer of the watch sharp but relaxed in his chair.
