San Diego Zoo - Galápagos Tortoises
Ménage à quatre - Tortoise style?
You can't help but notice a Galápagos tortoise's size. Their shells can measure 6 feet long and 4 feet wide, and males can weigh up to 600 pounds. They are the top herbivore on the volcanic island where they live, and they don't have much competition for food. They also live a long time. The known age record is 150 years, and some of the San Diego Zoo's tortoises are more than 100 years old.
The concave underside of a male Galápagos tortoise's shell allows him to fit securely on top of the female during mating.
