Etosha Pan
70 something by 180 km of perfectly flat alkali salts. It almost has a greasy texture under your boots. There are weird blues and greens from the dead algae, which reminded me a little of the filter beds we used to have to rake at the DPW in the summer. Apparently about once a year it rains enough to bring the lake back to its prehistoric form, and thousands of pelicans migrate here to drink from it and stand around on one foot. I would love to see that some day. In this mode it's frighteningly stark and ultraviolet.
