Maquis
When Napoleon was in exile towards the end of his life, he claimed he could smell Corsica, his birthplace, from across the sea. He was probably referring to the Maquis.
Maquis is the name given to the shrub vegetation that covers most of Corsica. It consists of sage, juniper, buckthorn, spurge olive and myrtle among other things. I have never smelled anything like it -completely amazing...
