Dear Photo Diary

Science shizzle

Not much photography time today unfortunately. I did spend a while this morning practising my Photoshop skills, minor retouching and the like. Quite good fun actually, I think I've finally got a grip on layers and masks.

Then I was back in work to give a seminar this afternoon. As I sat down at my desk I felt all the life drain out of me, I've loved it there and the people are great but enough is enough and I'm looking forward to moving on. The talk went ok, I threw it together in about an hour which wasn't ideal, but it was an informal thing anyway. A friendly audience always helps!

On the way home I stopped off at my boyfriend's lab and had a poke around his old equipment. He informs me this is a gallium lamp. I've done calculations on gallium so to me it's a set of energy levels and equations, it's nice to see the real world version :)

PS: view in large and you might see me!

Edit: for those who are wondering, apparently thus helps to control the frequency of a laser beam. If you want your laser to be at the right frequency to match a transition in gallium, you use one of these to help lock the laser... or something like that :)
