One daze at a time...

It's Pépé story time

And all is quiet. And all is dimly lit. And all is whispered. And all is drowsy.
And Pépé is a great story teller.

He even knows not to read Hansel and Gretel to little Mimi, a mistake that I made a little while back, sending her off to a night of wild nightmares and pre-dawn terrors.
I did realize as I was reading this masterpiece of mental torture that Hansel and Gretel should carry a "rated 18" red target on the cover, but it was too late, I could not abruptly end it half way through... Terrified as she was, Mimi demanded to hear this classic neurosis-inducing tale to its bitter end.

Here are a few carefully chosen extracts:

"We cannot even feed Hansel and Gretel properly," he said to his wife one night.
"Why bother to feed them when we can't feed ourselves?" said his wife. "We could leave them in the forest. They would never find the way back."
The woodcutter was horrified by this idea, but his wife was cruel and strong-willed and he eventually was forced to agree.

The old woman crept upstairs to look at the sleeping children. She touched Hansel's rosy cheek. "Yes, I shall have this one first," she said and cackled softly, for she was really a horrible witch who lured little children to her house and ate them.

*****

Before long they ran through the forest and back home. The woodcutter cried for joy when he saw them, and his wife could say nothing at all - for she was dead and buried long since, which was good enough for her.

Is it just me or there is something fundamentally wrong with all of the above?!?!?!
