Kennet and Avon Canal

Colourful old barges on the Kennet & Avon canal at Bradford on Avon.

A lovely morning stroll along the canal path peeking in to see what was going on in these house boats. Many are occupied by hippy types. The roofs are often covered in plants and firewood and watering cans and old bikes. Their cats wander about on the path waiting to be stroked. Their dogs disappear into the woods, chasing rabbits. Smoke weaves up from the chimneys as the occupiers cook up a tasty breakfast or have the first brew of the day.

It appears to be an idyllic life -- when the sun`s shining. But when it`s wet and muddy -- and at night when everything is pitch black -- it must all look quite different and not so comfortable.

But this morning I`d have happily swopped my house for their boat and puttered off into the distance -- making ripples as we went...

On the way home we saw three herons flying over a river...
