seasonal confusion

this lady sheep has obviously got the time of year wrong! I spotted these lambs on my way home from work and so, when I got home, I grabbed the camera and dog...and then remembered that I have children, so sat around waiting for child#3 to get home from school....at last, I could tootle back down the hill on shank's pony and shoot some sheep.

reason for late lambing is - most probably - because this sheep mama is an Engadiner-type (though it's unlikely that she's purebred, as her ears are too small and her nose too straight) and they have assymetrical seasons...which, in the common parlance, means that they have three sets of lambs within two years. Mated with a with 'meaty' man (as this one obviously has been), the farmer gets more meat units per livestock unit per annum.

Here endeth your livestock lesson of the day. With apologies to those of a sensitive nature who don't think 'lamb' and then immediately think of steak....
