World Duathlon Championships

Back again for the Elite and U23 races. The big story was the win for local woman Catriona Morrison in the women's race. Although she didn't lead the whole way round she was at or near the front for most of the race. By the time they got into the cycling section - seven laps of the park - it was between her and the frenchwoman Sandra Levenez. They got off the bikes together but Cat got ahead on the run, with enough time to more or less stop at the finish to wave to the crowd before crossing the line. And a British woman was also first home in the U23 competition. In the men's event three Belgians got away together in the cycling and although one was dropped slightly in the run, the first two entered the finishing straight together. Bart Aernouts was pushed forward by his compatriot Rob Woestenborghs and so crossed the line first. Seemed a little disappointing that they didn't race to the line, but apparently Aernouts had stayed with Woestenborghs as he weakened on the last lap, so it was probably right. The third Belgian home was Joerie Vansteelant, brother of Benny Vansteelant who won the 2007 ETU European Championships in Edinburgh but died later that year following a road accident while training.
