Earthquake.
Sorry I haven't been blipping lately, I was staying at my boyfriends house during the earthquake.
So blippers...
As you may have heard, the South Island of New Zealand was 'rocked' by a 7.1 earthquake on Saturday 4th, at 4.35am. The epicentre was 40 km west of Christchurch so we were hit badly. As Christchurch is built on softer ground, there was a lot of damage to commercial buildings and houses. Sadly we lost many of our iconic old buildings and with it some of the cities history. Currently we are in a state of emergency, which stays in place until at least wednesday noon.
As I said, I was staying at my boyfriends house on the night of the quake. We had already had a rough night because I was feverish, and Caleb was up looking after me for quite a while. Eventually we both fell asleep. Suddenly, I was jolted awake by a smallish shaking motion. Caleb had already been awake. Within seconds, everything seemed to happen at once. The room began shaking violently. I said 'f*#!' and immediately Caleb and I ran to his cupboard. As I was running, the force of the quake actually knocked me to my hands and knees. Once in the cupboard, I jumped into Caleb's arms while we kept shaking. That's when I noticed the power had gone out. It felt like forever, it was horrible. Once the 7.1 stopped, Caleb yelled 'aftershock' for his two brother in the rooms next to us. We sat through that, then Caleb ran down to check on his dad. I was frozen in the cupboard for quite some time. Once Caleb came back to get me, we went downstairs. I couldn't stop shaking -_-
We all went downstairs, and sorted out the generator + torches. I sat in the truck listening to the radio with Israel while the other boys sorted out everything.
Soon we had enough power to run a few lights and the radio inside, or just the tv. Caleb, Malachi, Israel and I sat in the lounge in sleeping bags watching the tv while Jason (Caleb's father) went to work as he works for Orion (power).
We all had naps during the day, and the power came on at about 1 so we were very lucky. So many people are still without power and water :(
I stayed another night with them, I felt safe with Caleb.
We are still getting aftershocks, some of them quite bad. Many of my friends haven't been able to sleep because of them. But repairs are starting already, and in a way this earthquake has been good. Noone died in result of the earthquake, only two injuries. We were lucky it hit in the morning. And this will be creating jobs for many people - plumbers, builders, brickies, etc...
I just count ourselves very lucky.
