Zola? Jesus!
To Glasgow to see band Cymbals Eat Guitars in a venue called Stereo that I'd heard good things about. One of the band members was ill so we were forwarded to the Captain's Rest on the Gt Western Road to see Cymbals' support band, Women, and the American outfit pictured here, called Zola Jesus.
The singer, Nika Roza Danilova, who is apparently opera trained - she's certainly short, about 4ft 11in - had a haunting, wailing, Siouxsie-like delivery. Pretty strong, pretty raw, pretty unusual and very Goth.
She paced relentlessly back and forth on the stage like she was on a fitness kick - hence the light trail - while her backing guys played synths with a circa. 1981 sound that was a cross between Depeche Mode and Human League.
During the last number she ended up in the crowd, writhing around on the floor like a crazy thing. I don't know if she does this at every gig, but her efforts were much appreciated by me.
