I went on my first proper ride today since the accident - just over to Bristol and back. The bike was pretty comfortable though I think I might have to get the handlebars raised slightly - not sure. At least the saddle isn't uncomfortable - I was worried it was going to be.
The police got in touch the other day to say that it is unlikely that they will press charges against the driver of the car that hit me. This is fine by me - as far as I'm concerned it was a mistake and I didn't want the driver prosecuted anyway. We're all capable of making mistakes and I don't think there was ever any attempt to present it as anything other than that.
Note that this doesn't affect my case against the driver in terms of compensation - the test that the police use for prosecution is somewhat harsher than the one that is used to determine fault in terms of the claim.
My only slight annoyance is that my accident came at a time when the police in Bath have made some quite big public statements about on the spot fines for people caught cycling on the pavement. So on the one hand, you've got an activity that is very unlikely to result in any kind of injury to pedestrians but which in theory can result in an on the spot 30 quid fine vs an activity that regularly causes injury to pedestrians and cyclists but which is let off because car driving somehow seems to be given special status in our society.
I don't have a problem with the police using their common sense to fine extreme cases of anti-social cycling on the pavement - I'm sure that this is what they will do anyway. It's the "all cyclists are a problem" attitude which goes with it - not from the police but from a few nutters writing into the local paper - that is somewhat tiresome.
Sorry... rant over.
