Roseate Skimmer

Dragonfly eggs are laid near the water and when they hatch, the nymphs will live nearly two years on the bottom of streams and ponds. Reaching adulthood they transform into dragonflies and take to the air, where they travel with wings that sparkle with spectacular colors by reflecting and refracting light. Few insects or birds maneuver as well as a dragonfly. Flying up to 30 mph, they will twist, turn, move up and down, fly backwards, even change directions instantaneously. They can spot movement 40 feet away, so it's amazing that we manage to photograph them at all; I think, sometimes, that they allow us to capture them, and pose accordingly.
