Basement Crucifix
We will probably have to sell our flat within the next year, so we have started looking at various places, getting into the stride (rather than galloping away with ourselves). Today we looked at a beautiful old Georgian house, next to a church. It has been used as a parish hall, among other things, and is very run down inside, especially down in the basement, where I saw this crucifix, left lying in exactly this position. I was brought up RC, though the whole edifice began to slide off my shoulders, like a mouldy old greatcoat, when I was about 15 or so. But such symbols as the above still have resonance, a power to haunt, all the more so when encountered in unexpected places.
