The old Tai Tapu Library ( completed in 1932 and still in use today) largely funded by Sir Heaton Rhodes, as a gift to his local community ,Once described as 'the grand old man' of New Zealand public life, Sir Heaton Rhodes was certainly one of the best-known and most-loved public figures in Canterbury province in the first half of the twentieth century, His country mansion, 'Otahuna',is nearby at Tai Tapu , is now run as Lodge attracting discerning guests from all around the world.
