Industrial Shetland
Behind me there were acres and acres of farmland but in front we had Scatsta Airport and behind that the massive Sullom Voe Oil Terminal. The airport is a constant noise all day with helicopters and planes coming in and out taking workers to and from the North Sea rigs and then taking them back to Aberdeen. While the terminal is not as busy as it once was there is a new gas plant under construction which should extend it's life, so we are told, by about 35 years.
While it does look out of place you don't really get the impression that it is the biggest oil terminal in Europe and there is no doubting the wealth that the oil has brought to the Islands. Quite happy however that it is situated about 40 miles north of our village.
