Five Years Later
I ended up taking an unintentional extended break from blip, but I am back as of today, and plan on going back and adding some highlights from the past three months.
This is a house and FEMA trailer in Uptown New Orleans five years to the day after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. I pass this every day on my way to work but today seemed like the best day to capture it.
I do not quite know how I am supposed to feel about Katrina, having moved to New Orleans just last year. I never visited the city before the storm but I work for a grant program to give homeowners money to finish reconstructing their houses. I listen to homeowners' stories every day about how they literally lost everything, yet I see how reluctant the state is to help make people whole again. The city has come so far, but still has so far to go (the fact that people are still living in FEMA is a perfect example of this).
I'm not quite sure where I am going with that, but to me it is important to know that people continue to struggle, and the rebuild is ongoing and can be painfully slow.
