Catherine Lacey: BoyStory

What d'ya think Reu Reu, fancy a go?

Fantastic day. Whilst bright and sunny at home a short drive from the beach, by the time I arrived at the beach with the boys, the marine layer had moved in and there was a slight chill to the air. I'd just been to see a photographer who shot for us when Reuben first came home from hospital after a 6 month admission and, seeing the photos again after 3 years of procrastination, although I was technically critical of them in my head, I had to buy the lot as a CD rather than prints, simply so I could edit them my way and make an album fitting for the occasion. The homecoming was a time of mixed emotions: the joy, euphoria was mixed with such medical intensity looking after him, nurses not showing up so we would nurse him day and night til they eventually did. The frailty of him at the time, barely having gained weight since birth, his perpetual illnesses and re-admissions. The endless fighting for medical coverage, unbearably heartbreaking. The day before he came home, I'd had a miscarriage after IVF, so desperately wanting to give Reuben a sibling. That Callum should be conceived 6 months later through IVF is one of life's great miracles.

On the Santa Monica beach, we played in a wonderful park overlooking the ocean. It may not be my beloved Bournemouth, but I love it all the same. And then who should come along but Spiderman awaiting kids at summer camp (does such a camp exist in the UK? I don't remember where you drop your kids off during the summer hols).

An 11 year old upstart boy asked Spiderman:
"How much have you made year to date in taxable earnings?"
Spiderman ignores him.
"Can you spin a web?"
"No" replies Spiderman, "Because there are too many people in the way and it could get dangerous".
"Well there are plenty more people in the cities when we see you in the movies".
I had to tell the guy, pre-teenage boy actually, that he made me laugh.

After a good couple of hours here, we headed towards the aquarium and whilst small, our $2 total admission opened up an hour's fun. KTLA the TV channel were shooting for a series called Heal the Bay and the boys and are were filmed for it. Watch out on September 18 for an appearance.

Came back, Jason had cooked a great meal and slipped away to do some work with a glass of red wine (which strangely I threw all over me). Looking forward to making the disk of the homecoming way back and will post when I do, just so you can see how far Reuben really has come.

Fantastic day. Feeling very happy from it.

PS Oh and I got my 2nd ever parking ticket. Bummer. But not going to let these things get me down anymore. Too short.
