A matter of pride

Wood piles are a matter of pride in the Bernese Alps. Every house and farm has wood piles - some of them huge - neatly stacked and covered with tin sheets, tarpaulins or log planks. They're stacked by age so the owner knows when the time is right for burning. It's probably like a wine cellar to these folks and they look after their wood very carefully.

As forecast the weather was overcast this morning so we took an 'easy' walk from Wengen to Burglauenen via Spatenalp, which is a remote mountain farm that provides basic refreshments - we had home made bread with slabs of cheese from the farm and sliced tomatoes. Such basic food never tasted so good!

From here it was a knee-jerking descent alongside the walls of the valley which took us down almost 900 metres of descent in a very short time. Many of the sections were protected with rope handholds for extra secuity. It was on the side of this valley that I came across today's Blip at an old cabin.

As we neared the foot of the valley the sun came out and it looks like we are to be treated to a few more days of hot sunshine. Happy days and back into the high mountains tomorrow.

Hope everyone had a great day.
