Mozartkugeln
It rained this morning and thunderstorms were predicted for today as well, so we skipped hiking and went to the city of Salzburg instead.
Salzburg is of course known as the birthplace of the famous classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. However, it is also the birthplace of Austria's most famous souvenir: the Mozartkugeln.
The Mozartkugeln (Mozart ball) were created in 1890 by confectioner Paul Fürst in Salzburg. He named after the famous composer. The sweets have a heart of green pistachio marzipan, covered in a layer of nougat with a dark chocolate coating.
As the popularity of the sweets started to grow, numerous of other confectioners started making them. Now over 90 million Mozartkugeln are produced each year!
