Crab fishing
This is the greatest summer activity ever! You take a periwinkle or a mussel, smash it, and tie the soft parts to a piece of string. The goodies are lowered in a suitable habitat for small crabs. A good day a crab can expect to be pulled out of the water a good few times and put into a bucket of sea water (changed occasionally, to avoid a slow cooking experience). And then they go back and the next kid fishes them up. It's kind of a mutual agreement.
The good thing is that it teaches kids patience, to handle icky stuff (smashed up snails), the principles of catching you own food, how to handle live animals and also to keep them happy and safe.
Show me a computer game that does all that.
