Portsmouth and beyond...

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink..

Today brought relentless and unceasing rain to the area, which is not entirely conducive to taking photographs! In to work and back home again was the order of the day....

Here's the view from my bedroom to the back of the house where I live. Not a particularly inspiring shot, but an opportunity to talk about water..something we take for granted in the west.

The contraption at the back of the shot is the well, which provides water to the property. It's not drinkable, even when boiled and filtered, but it does for washing and showering. It's also not a regular supply, given that the water needs to be pumped up from the well and into the house...not always possible when there is no power...which happens on a daily basis in Nepal.

Twice a week, 'vaguely drinkable' water gets pumped in, which you can drink once you've boiled and filtered it.

Bear in mind that this is the 21st Century, and the circumstances that I find myself in are pretty good. However, access to safe drinking water for the people of Nepal, (and much of the rest of the developing world) is a long way off, and illness and disease as a result of contaminated water is still a major issue....

Here is an earlier blog entry I made about water if you're interested
