The Lozarithm Lens

Semington

Oh dear, just can't keep away from these swing bridges on the Kennet and Avon now. I found another four today on the stretch between Bowerhill (near Melksham) and Semington. This is the third, Lowes Swing Bridge, an accommodation bridge of iron construction for a footpath across the canal, 59 miles 44 chains from Reading, with some canal bank foliage thrown in for good measure.

These swing bridges were originally built by the Kennet and Avon Canal Company for farmers whose land their canal had crossed, and the paths the farmers used are also public rights of way. The canal was opened in 1810.
