like water pulled upwards

And like water pulled upwards
by gravity inverted

like rain reaching up through itself
to the clouds

he fights this pull
that buries his feet

in desert sand
seeping under skin
gripping bone and sinew
and refusing to let go.

And like water pulled downwards
by gravity everted

like the pull of a river
ancient and slow

he sinks deep into currents
letting his ears slip
beneath the surface
as the sound of history washes over him.
