Gallows Pole
I have asked for nothing, and nothing have I received
Save the judgements of those who judge themselves wise.
I pass the post that once guided wayward folk,
Gaunt beneath a swollen sky
And tilt my chin at its sneer.
If it is my last sight, this spider's gibbet
Then I will not blink.
If it is my last touch, a kiss of cord
Then I will not flinch.
And if it is my last smell, with the scent of azaleas in the air
I will not be deceived.
For I have asked for nothing;
And nothing have I received.
