DBG South African Garden

Many people when they hear the words South African Garden are surprised parts get cold enough that flora native there would thrive in Denver. Thanks to the many high mountains (Drakensberg, the many bergs of the Karoo, and a few high peaks of the West Cape) South Africa have much to offer gardeners in cold climates.

Most of the plants in the containers are annuals, butDelosperma, Ruschia, Eucomis, Gladiolus, Crocosmia, many Helichrysum, and several Agapanthus are just a few of the better known genera that have members who have changed the face of gardens in cold climates.

The pinkish grass is Melinis neviglumis who polite behavior in cold claimtes makes it a great summer annual. A close relative Melinis repens feels a little too much at home in Mexico where it can been seen in the steamy Yucatan, the temperate plains near Ciudad Chihuahua, or sun drenched Cabo.
