Preaching Stone

Ruthwell Cross, Ruthwell, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

This is an 8th Century anglo-saxon preaching stone which features reliefs which tell gospel stories.

Ruthwell was part of the Kingdom of Northumberland and this monument, together with the Bewcastle cross in present day Cumbria and the Lindisfarne Gospels are stunning examples of Northumbrian art and now are fragments of a lost ecclesiastical landscape.
