Fish,chips and chantrelles!!
Our most wonderful, generous pal Gavin shared his secret Chantrelle spot in the woods with me this afternoon!!!
High above the valley floor we climbed in his trusty old steed, (his 4x4 ) and showed me where he harvests sloes ( to make great sloe gin), wlid raspberries, late flowering elderflowers and..................where the delicious golden trumpets lie hidden under the silver birch.
Why has he shared this special place you may ask?
Well, he is about to join his wife Jess and family in Victoria on Vancouver Island where they are beginning a new life. Far from these shores and reminiscent of times gone by when Scottish families emigrated to Canada and America.
Jess, Daisy and Esther are there and pussy cat Silica and our darling Gav will join them next week. Spoke to Jess today and she is settling in just fine.
My eyes are filled with tears as I type this. Gav you are the salt of this earth and sitting today beside you,on the stones under the trees, where you scattered your Dad's ashes, I felt such a loss.
We will not grow old together as I had imagined, I will not be able to comment on Daisy's first boyfriend,Esther's musical ablilites, Jess's famous Hannuka parties etc etc. The loss is ours. We wish you guys from the bottom of our hearts all the best life has to offer.
It's all good!!!
So, tonight's supper is a combination of chantrelles, home grown potatoes, beans, peas and a Pacific caught fish whose name I can't remember. Silver something!!!!
