View From My Room
My plan today was to hit the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. I'm keen to explore all forms of photography but already, movement and flowers seems to be the two areas I keep going back to. Unfortunately the weather had other plans for me. I was sitting listening to the radio, feeling sorry for myself, and remembering that as I joined the site today, I still needed to take a shot and get it posted. After milking the why me for thirty minutes or so, I had one of those Homer Simpson Doh moments, when I realised that in looking out the window, I was staring right at a potential shot, a small tea rose growing just proud of my windowsill.
I've only been at this seriously for about a year but I've read loads, talked to other photographers and even done a small course. I've had loads of advice on shooting flowers, but I find I'm tending to favour treating them in a lot of ways, just like a portrait. Where possible I'll try to find an isolated flower head, then make sure I have a suitable background that I can blur, which looks natural and adds to the beauty of the flower without overwhelming it. I don't mind dew or raindrops and even the occasional insect works well.
I freely admit that this isn't my best shot though. I knew I had to get something posted so I worked with what I had. The start of another working week tomorrow but I generally now always have a camera with me, even if it's just the one on my phone so hopefully future posting will be better composed.
