our beautiful wasp byke!
The electrician climbed into our loft space today and discovered a humungous wasp byke.
needless to say he decided to call it a ay and return only when we had dealt with the problem.
So.......................a few phone calls later and with the help of our local bee man they will soon be on their way.
John Taylor gave me some info on them.
The size of the bykes can vary wildly from that of a golf-ball to that of a football. The larger ones can house tens of thousands of wasps. He had never seen such an enorrmous one as this!
During the winter, the byke will be empty - the queen away hibernating somewhere warm and the workers all dead and they never return to old nests.
In Defence of Wasps
You should think twice before getting rid of a byke unnecessarily as the wasps are hard working gardener's assistants, eating insects, caterpillars and other nasties. You may be well to actually encourage at least one byke about the garden (though not in the house) as they do a fine job of culling greenfly and the like.
However a byke in our roof space sadly has to go. Our 'sparky' needs to know he'll be sting free or he'll not be back
Asked Bill if he knew a song that I could use as alink to todays Blip and he suggested any song by Sting!!! He he! so here is my favourite one STING
