Night Sessions
The photo is of the El Jorge boulder at night looking up into Chaos Canyon during a night climbing session. If you care about my day, read on...
Wow, yesterday was a long day...
We went up to RMNP for a nighttime bouldering session. I'd never done it before and was a bit apprehensive about hiking and climbing in the dark. Regardless of this fact, I decided to go anyway. When we arrived it was raining so we waited until about 18:00 before starting the hike. We headed straight for upper chaos and arrived at the meadow around 19:40. Due to the high number of mosquitoes, I didn't climb much until later when it cooled down and the bugs went away. Cooper worked on "I Comb my Hair Like God" for a little while and nearly did it. Patrick and I worked a few moves on it but weren't terribly psyched on it. After that, we headed down to the "El Jorge" boulder where I worked on right El Jorge while Cooper and Patrick worked left. I made some progress on right after discovering better beta for tall people. Still need core strength though....
We finished climbing around 23:00 and headed back to the parking lot. Hiking across a talus field in the dark seems like it would be a terrifying prospect, however, it was actually quite enjoyable and made the experience far different from any I'd done in Chaos Canyon before. As we walked out, we passed Bear Lake which was lit up spectacularly by the moon at night. In retrospect, I should have taken a picture of that, but it was getting late and we were in a bit of a hurry to leave.
It was just after midnight when we hit Estes and we made good time until we came across a fresh car accident on the 36. It didn't seem like too bad of an accident, but we stayed around until the authorities arrived. Unfortunately for us, the accident forced us to detour to Loveland adding a bit of extra time to our drive. We stopped for some food at a surprisingly busy Burger King for 2:30 in the morning, got on 25, and headed for home finally. I think we finally got in around 3:30 making for a total trip time of 13 hours. Long day of climbing, enjoyable as always.
