The winner takes it all............
Thursday night is quiz night at the Rose and Crown.
The Boss and I, together with our friends Derek and Vicky, occasionally aided and abetted by our daughter play as Two Black Dogs and Harold McMillan.
The name comes from a painting by Lowry called "The Fight" which used to hang in the pub but is now in the living room of our house.
The quiz is billed as a fun quiz, but as the prize is £20 to spend behind the bar there are occasions of skullduggery and jiggery-pokery, mainly from students in holday time who think doing a quiz means how fast you can find the answers on your mobile.
Fortunately we win, often but not always, and we usually beat our fierce rivals, The Millennium ClockWatchers. In the winter months I join the Watchers to form the R&C team to play in the Bury and District Quiz League (Champions 5 years out of the last 7 and in two of those years Cup winners too), a much more fierce thing with individual rounds and much harder questions.
Sometimes the quiz provides a real belly laugh.
Amanda, the slightly ditzy landlady once asked "Which of the MARITAL arts has a name meaning Empty hand?" Several ribald comments rang out until she hastily re-asked "Which of the MARTIAL arts....."
But the all time favourite happened when a young trainee manager asked "Which famous artist painted The Hawaiian?" Stunned silence ensued, until someone asked for the question to be repeated. Again puzzled expressions all round. Who could it be? Did any one in any team in the pub have a clue?
Eventually a voice asked " Can we have the spelling please?" "Certainly", came the reply, "it's H...A...Y...W...A...I...N" Constable would be spinning in his grave!
p.s. we won tonight, I did take a shot of our answer sheet and the prize token but it was slightly out of focus. I hate it when cameras do that and it was certainly nothing to do with the 3 pints and 2 JD that I'd drunk!!!
