Walk backwards

For many years this Victorian archway was the main vehicle entrance to and exit from the Fremlin's Pale Ale Brewery in Earl Street, Maidstone. Brewing ceased on the site in the early 1970s but the brewery yard dominated the town centre and it was used as a bottling plant and maintenance yard for vehicles until the late 1990s.

In 2005 the site reopened as a shopping centre. This archway is the only structure which survives from the original brewery - who knows how many pints of beer have passed through it? It's now one of the main entrances to the centre and this shot is taken from partway down the stairs which join the shopping level with Earl Street which passes left to right below. Straight ahead and visible through the arch is Pudding Lane and at the other end of that is Paynes fruit & veg shop as blipped the other day.

Here's a shot I took some time ago which shows the other side of the arch and the famous elephant weathervane - the elephant was the Fremlin's logo. Okay let's get the title out of the way - the shopping centre is called Fremlin Walk so what you can see above the arch is............
