Common Ink Caps (Coprinus atramentaria)

I found these in abundance at one of my usual haunts.
Books on fungi will tell you that these are edible but poisonous (figure that out!). Fortunately they're not fatally poisonous but can cause violent vomiting etc when taken with alcohol, hence another name for them 'tippler's bane'.
They're called ink caps because when they get older they exude an inky substance from the cap. At one time this was boiled with cloves to make a superior ink.
I love the texture and form of fungi so expect more blips of them as autumn approaches.
