The Kittiwake Tower-high rise haven!
I recently blipped Kittiwakes nesting on the Tyne Bridge and on ledges around it, but they have another nesting place.
The Baltic Flour Mill was home to Tyneside's largest colony of Kittiwakes. In 2002 it became the Centre of Contemporary Art, loosing the birds favoutie nesting site. To provide an alternative Gateshead Council built Kittiwake Tower.
The tower is now home to around 100 pairs. It has been declared a Local Nature Reserve.
Here you can see the tower. The steps are for the council workers to clean the nesting site after the young birds have fledged.
