Concrete

Ben has gone to Abu Dhabi so we decided to have a day out. With no Ben, we can all fit in my car so off we went to Trebah Gardens - somewhere that has been recommended to me by a few people - which is just down the road.

We had a brilliant time. The gardens are beautiful and lots of fun for the children. The beach at the bottom is an added bonus. I knew about it so we went equipped with towels and cossies. We hadn't been warned about the little cafe - so coffee and ice cream on tap too!

So the link with concrete? I have done a little c&p.....

In 1944 the beach was covered in concrete and the rocks dynamited to allow access for tanks and vehicles. On 1 June a regiment of 7,500 men of the 29 US Infantry Division with their tanks, guns and transport embarked from Trebah Beach in ten 150 foot flat-bottomed landing craft. For five miserable days they battled through enormous seas to the Isle of Wight and then on to the D-Day assault landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy, where they suffered grievous casualties.

Donald Healey, the racing driver, designed and built his well-known marque of sports car here and obtained a grant to remove the concrete from the beach.

This is the end of the concrete jetty that remains - I took various pictures today, the rejects are here but I think this was my favourite of the on theme shots.

After Trebah we had to go onto Rick Stein's for tea as Mum and Dad missed out last time they came down.
