Reawakening
Unaware of being the focus of so much attention, in his hospital bed Adam slept on.
Carefree dreams of soaring high in the sky played through his mind, to the soundtrack of a poppy half-remembered song: I see a mansard roof though the trees, I see a salty message written in the eaves...
With the bold nonsense of dream-logic, he realised he'd always been able to fly, and wondered why he'd never bothered to use this special talent. He felt ridiculously, laughingly joyful.
But not for much longer.
It was impossible to say which of the noises woke him; as a matter of fact, he would remember neither.
However, when his eyes opened he stared for a moment or two, blinked and then blinked again.
"You,' he said. "What are you doing here?"
