In the back of the van, Hewson was doing his best to keep the nurse calm. "It's OK, we were held up in traffic but we're nearly there now. Just relax - it's going to be fine."

He looked at the Major, who mouthed "nearly there" to him.

Just as he was about to pass this message on, he was flung sidewards as the driver pulled into the hospital car park.

The tyres scrunched then skidded slightly on the tarmac as the van came to a sudden stop.

"Right," said the Major. "Let's go."
