regular monitoring
I'd been meaning to do much more growth-visibility comparison-enabling pictures (along the lines of TFP's exemplary blip-a-child) of the wingpiglet than I've ended up getting round to doing so far, particularly in the initial rapid phases of growth. I was uploading a couple of mobile videos the other day which indicate quite alarmingly how much larger he already is compared to just a couple of weeks ago, mostly through seeing that a babygrow which is now far too small was quite baggy on him in the first week after his birth. I have at least one usable picture of his face each day but shall have to start scheduling particular views, even though child-growth is far from linear and would not suffer from slight irregularities in the frequency of records.
A couple of weeks back Edgar had to be presented back at the neonatal unit to have a blood sample taken to check for anaemia, with a follow-up check today. I went to the first one as it was made to sound considerably more serious over the phone to a sleep-deprived Nicky than it turned out to be, and although the process of extracting a couple of millilitres of blood from a three-week-old didn't look particularly pleasant it wasn't deemed something I'd need to attend a second time, especially when the results take a few hours and just get delivered by phone. The previous check showed nothing of note but after the follow-up assay's results were ready Nicky was told that his neutrophil count had been borderlineish at the previous assessment and was now slightly low, though this was appended by a slight reassurance that it's not checked that frequently so might not be spectacularly abnormal at what it is and might improve of its own accord. He otherwise seemed another day livelier and more recognizant and smilier and gurglier this evening when I got home but seemed a little bit smaller again in light of the results, especially after Nicky had spent a few minutes with Dr Google. The most reassuring thing is that he's not wanted back for another follow-up check for another couple of weeks.
