Learning to eat for themselves
The four largest have started to eat for themselves now, although they sometimes get it wrong.
It's been a busy weekend and I would like to ask a favour of you gardeners. There are a lot of reports and phone calls of nests being disturbed while moving piles of logs and leaves. Please be careful when moving these things as they are the kinds of places hedgehogs like to nest.
If you disturb a nest, cover it up again and try to stay away from it. Keep an eye it from a distance.
If the mother runs off she needs to know it's safe to return. If she does return she will need to have a regular source of food and water nearby so the babies can grow without wearing out mum.
The babies will cry out for food if mum doesn't return, and at this point the babies should be picked up and taken to the nearest vet or wildlife rescue as they need to be given special food
