J is for Jacobite

The sun was shining when I woke up this morning - earlier than my normal Saturday morning.  It was looking like a great day to start with a walk, so I headed out to the Culloden Battlefield.

Culloden was the site of the final confrontation of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising, with the Battle of Culloden taking place on 16 April 1746.  It was the last battle to be fought on British soil, and was over in less than one hour.  An estimated 1,250 Jacobites were killed, along with 50 troops from the opposing Government army.  This is the memorial cairn that was erected in 1881 to mark the site of the clan graves.

The Visitor Centre is a popular attraction in the area.  There were two bus parties there this morning when I was walking, and that was just after 9am.

Quarter Finals:
Argentina 0, Germany 4
Paraguay 0, Spain 1
