The grimiest grime in Grimesville

Or as it's known in Edinburgh: Jacob's Ladder - a flight of stairs that connects Regent Road up by the Scottish Government building at St Andrews House and Calton Hill and one of Europe's largest open-air public toilets in Calton Road round the back of Waverley station. They are the stairs with everything - empty vodka bottles, abandoned pants, junk, vomit etc.

But the bit under the railway lines is marvellously gloomy, with the effect of the railway bridge enhanced by the tiling on the wall and the running damp and streaks of rust staining. If I've left this dark enough you'll be wondering what the woman was thinking walking through there but the darkness is a bit of an exaggeration. It's dark but only for a few feet and the road is very busy with commuters dodging the narrow Royal Mile and the busy junction at the top of Leith Street. Through the archway that leads to the steps you get a glimpse of how bright the daylight is beyond the tunnel.

Only two more sleeps until holidays! Woo hoo!
